"....Little Things Mean Alot"

A freind being deployed to Afghanistan had asked if myself or others might be interested in "adopting" a unit by sending coffee to be distributed, home made goodies, and letters, drawings and or pictures. I of course said yes. Being a Veteran myself I understood what a difference little things mean to soldiers overseas.

Excerpt from an e-mail recieved from my freind: ............Last year I had my family and freinds sending me goodies for distribution. Fortunately my many cousins love to bake cookies and other goodies. They sure didn't last long after the box was opened in front of the soldiers. Other little things in the box really tickled the soldiers... sometimes a small batch of letters from young kids addressed to "any service member", and sometimes targeted to any lady or gentleman service member. After a while you'd see many of these letters taped or pinned to the plywood or canvas walls of the work spaces.

My construction of this site was to create a viable means to accomplish the task at hand. Number one was to contact as many of the coffee Micro-Roasters in the Pacific Northwest that I could, to ask for their support of this idea. After accomplishing this I will be working on seeking volunteers to help run an off and on a "Homemade Goodies" drive to send overseas.

"- UPDATES -"

5/02/2009
A few packages have been sent off to Afghanistan and Bagram Air Base. Hopefully we will soon find a way to get fresh coffee to the front lines which has been a hard thing to do. Many times I and others have unfortunatly had the thoughts that the pakages that we send could make it to the front line areas such as Firebase Vimoto or such places like it. As veterans during the Vietnam Era we saw these types of packages being stolen and sold on the black market. In a discussion with a fellow Vet at work (whom also participates in the donations sent), we discussed these possibilities. This type of scenario is unknown to us older vets, as this is a different type of war than what others have seen.
If any one whom may read this and can verify how packages are distributed it may help those that have questons that I would post here. Meanwhile we will send more when possible. I personnaly would like to hear more from coffee roasters that send or would like to participate in this program.
